Luxor

Overview

Luxor, often called the “world’s greatest open-air museum,” is a city in Upper Egypt situated on the East Bank of the Nile River. It was once known as ancient Thebes, the capital of Egypt during the New Kingdom period (1550-1077 BCE), and a significant religious and political center dedicated to the god Amun-Ra. The modern name “Luxor” derives from the Arabic word “al-quṣūr,” meaning “the palaces.”
